Interview with Elizabeth Lim

Updated: Sep 29, 2019

Brief bio: Elizabeth Lim is the author of the upcoming YA novel Spin the Dawn. It is scheduled to be released July 9th, 2019.

Hi Ms. Lim! I'm super excited for Spin the Dawn! For those who don't know about your book, can you give us a short synopsis of it?

Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping YA fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and embarks on an impossible journey to sew three magic dresses, from the sun, the moon, and the stars.

It sounds amazing! Okay, so since this is a shorter interview, I'm going to ask the questions more pointed towards diversity, since that is what I'm wanting to focus my blog around. So, how is your book diverse?

My book is a Chinese-inspired fantasy that draws upon some of the Chinese folktales and myths I grew up with as a child.

What inspired you to write diversly?

When I began writing Spin the Dawn, my goal wasn’t to write a diverse story. I mainly wanted to write the book that I desperately would have wanted to read as a kid. Growing up, there weren’t many stories featuring strong Asian protagonists, especially not in fantasies, so I wanted to write one!

Speaking of books that are diverse, what's your favorite book that includes diverse characters and voices?

I have a lot at the moment! But off the top of my head, I love American Panda by Gloria Chao, Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman, and The Weight of Our Sky by Hanna Alkaf.

And what does that diversity - the diversity in other books, not yours - mean to you?

Diversity in books helps broaden our imaginations and see new worlds. It also gives us courage, as it did for me when I was a child looking for books featuring characters who had a background like mine, to have our own voice and show us that we are not alone.

I'm sure your book will inspire a lot of kids that will love to find themselves represented in literature! Before you have to go, can you give us five words that you would use to describe your book? Besides "diverse" of course!

Enchantment, family, ambition, journey, lies.

Ooh, I can't wait!

Thank you to Elizabeth Lim for being so willing and helpful in answering the questions I had!
